Man of the Street: Sixth Issue

ISO 160, aperture 8.0, and a shutter speed of 1/250th of a second

So the day all pictures of the newspaper were due, someone on the newspaper staff decided to tell me they needed gray background headshots for "Man on the Street."I took all the headshots with a 17-50mm lens. The headshots were easy to do and the column got finished.

Pool Graphic

ISO 800, aperture 4.0, and a shutter speed of 1/200th of a second

My assignment was to get a picture of the pool, the time board, and the banners. I used a 17-50mm lens. This image was going to be used as the background of a graphic Zac Baker was doing about swimming and some other sports. The graphic Baker did look really awesome, but the newspaper ended up just putting all of the information from the graphic into a bar chart. So this picture wasn't used.

Cover Photo for the Sixth Issue

Caroline Prieskorn took this photo, Sydney and I just edited this image in photoshop with Smith's supervision. This image was used for the cover. Smith was mainly teaching Sydney how to use certain tools on photoshop. We changed the coloring and made the shadow on his right eye disappear.

TTDSD

Sabrina Larson was the person who took this picture, but I was there to help and I was supposed to take the image, but I had to leave and finish my homework. I helped with the angle of this picture. We all figured out how to work the flashes properly and get the lighting right for this image. Getting the knife in focus was the hardest part of this picture. Sabrina did an awesome job and the entire TTDSD folder was amazing.

Check Presentation to the Student Body Officers

ISO 400, aperture 4.0, and a shutter speed of 1/200th of a second

I didn't really know I was going to take this assignment until twenty minutes before it happened. Potter came to me during lunch and told me to be in the math and science building before 11:30 and take a picture of a man presenting a check for prom to the student body officers. I took this image with a 24-105mm lens. I had my settings set correctly along with the 580 flash at 11:30, so I was ready to go! The picture was simple and turned out exactly how Tina wanted it.

Ben Norton's Student Body Campaign

ISO 200, aperture 9.0, and a shutter speed of 1/200th of a second

This image of Ben Norton wasn't an assignment; Brianna asked me to take some pictures of him for his campaign posters and shirts. This image of him was cut out and he was placed on top of the world on all of the campaign t-shirts. I didn't mind taking these images because I had nothing better to do. TOP is finished, and the last issue doesn't have many photo assignments yet. This image was taken on high key, but the background isn't 100% white probably because how I was positioned over him. He was too tall for a full body image, so I stood on a chair and angled the camera in a position where he didn't look too unproportionate. Both Ben and Brianna loved the images. I used a 17-50mm lens.

Man on the Street

ISO 160, aperture 8.0, and a shutter speed of 1/250th of a second

This picture was taken for fun when I was setting up the lighting for the "Man on the Street" column. I just had to put this picture on my blog because it's so awkward. I adore these too, and this photo is defiantly going on the slideshow at the publications' banquet. I used a 17-50mm lens.

ISO 160, aperture 8.0, and a shutter speed of 1/250th of a second

This image is for the actual "Man on the Street" column. There wasn't much to the picture, but I'm getting more comfortable in awkward situations which is a good thing. This girl was really sweet. It was easy taking this picture along with three others because the lighting was already set up correctly. I used a 17-50mm lens.

Promote Cheating Picture

ISO 1000, aperture 4.0, and a shutter speed of 1/200th of a second

The assignment was for a story an editor is writing for how teachers give so many worksheets that students are beginning to resort to cheating. The picture was suppose to capture busy work and students working together with no faces and hands/arms. I really like this image because it goes along with the story so well. The picture was taken with a 17-50mm lens. I stood on a chair behind these students and hovered over them to the image. The lighting in the room was great, so the picture turned out perfect!

All during photography today I've been making sure assignments that were recently assigned have been taken or are in the process of being taken. I went with Carlie to make sure the got the right horticulture picture, and I've been keeping Potter updated on what's being pushed after things are taken. I have a lot to do this week since the fifth newspaper issue is due Friday. AHHHH!!!! On the positive side, everything is almost done and I'm on top of it all, so it will be done with fabulous images from our lovely photography staff.

Approaching Deadline

The newspaper's 5th issue deadline is approaching and there are a lot of assignments that need to get done. I'm not too happy with this issue because the cover and double truck photos are all cartoons. Most of the interesting assignments are for online, and all the headshots taken are for print. Hopefully, the senior issue will have more interesting photos for print. I really want news so there could be interesting photojournalism stories to talk about, but this last issue is all about seniors so there won't be. Maybe next year the paper will have more news.

Sabrina's moth phobia

This photo was taken by Riley Madlock, but I helped her get the shadow and lighting right for the photo to look like her idea. It turned out really awesome. This was their second time working on it because the first round you couldn't tell what she was afraid of. They asked me to help them work on this photo and it was a lot of fun. Having the understanding of how lighting works, we all learned how do create a shadows. At first we tried holding the moth in front of the 400 alien bee, but in the photo it looked like a blob. After taking plenty of pictures when figuring out how we wanted Sabrina lit, we turned off the left alien bee and just kept the right alien bee on and turned on the power. Once we got the both correctly lit along with the shadow, we worked on the lighting on Sabrina, but that wasn't too hard.

We had a guest speaker today!! :)

Today Christena Doswett, a photo journalist, came to our photography class to talk to us about photography and her experience in the photography field. Christena was really fascinating. She showed us pictures that she took in Africa and explained their unique culture. Her pictures were all so unique and inspiring to everyone in the class. Her photos were TRUE photo journalist images; they told stories were fascinating. The way she framed her images was really unique. She had so many stories to tell, but all her stories about Africa were my favorite even though they were really sad. I learned that as a photographer, our job is to make EVERY image say a story, even if it's just a boring building, you can still make the image interesting by changing the framework and angle. She also gave the class a point of view about how important timing is with a picture of a little girl who saved her grandma. Christena explained how the grandma, who had a stroke, walked out on the porch to talk to someone while Christena was taking the portrait with the little girl. I really enjoyed her visit. She was truly inspiring. She was so cool, she even helped the class with picking out the top ten photos that would go in the sports and photo journalism categories for the TOP competition.

Writing on a Chalkboard Phobia

ISO 800, aperture 2.8, and a shutter speed of 1/250th of a second

ISO 800, aperture 2.8, and a shutter speed of 1/250th of a second

Both of these images were taken by Riley Madlock. Riley and Sabrina asked me to come with them since I knew what Mrs. Potter wanted. This was their second time shooting the assignment because the first time was a complete fail. This time they took a 580 flash and took the picture with the band hall's chalkboard. Laura's reaction wasn't posed, which is what made the picture. The first image was the one they used because my back in the second one is too distracting even though Laura is in focus. Both of these images were taken with a 17-50mm lens. I like the lighting in these images and I'm glad I got to help Riley and Sabrina out!

5th issue goal

Today in class I discussed how deadlines need to me met. Photographers in class have been waiting until the last minute, and things never get done. My goal for this 5th issue is to have everything done ahead of time, instead of rushing that last few weeks. There are at least 10 assignments that were assigned, so I made the deadline by Friday. As more stories are developed, the more assignments online and the published paper will need, so my goal is to get all assignments done for now. That away as the new assignments come, the photography staff can do them and not forget the assignments that I assigned two weeks ago.

THS vs. LE boys varsity soccer

ISO 1600, aperture 4.0, and a shutter speed of 1/2000th of a second

ISO 1600, aperture 4.0, and a shutter speed of 1/1600th of a second

Both of these images were taken at a day game, meaning that the light in the images would be good! These images are my favorite because they are action shots with the ball. I really enjoyed taking pictures of this game because the opposing team was pretty entertaining and the lighting in the images was amazing. Both of these images were taking with a 70-200mm lens.

Another Mess Up

ISO 100, aperture 8.0, and a shutter speed of 1/160th of a second

I took this picture for the yearbook. I think they were doing a section about how this girl won a state competition in art. I enjoyed taking this image because she was really sweet and the artwork was pretty neat. I took this image with a 17-50mm lens. It was cloudy outside so I should have had my ISO at 400 and my shutter speed at 400, that a way my aperture could be smaller... which would then make the background more bokeh and the background could have been in less focus. The picture turned out fine, but I wasn't thinking like I should have been when i took this image. She and her art work could be a lot more focused.

DECA parking lot

ISO 100, aperture 4.5, and a shutter speed of 1/250th of a second

This assignment was a last minute picture of the DECA parking lot needed for the online newspaper. The story was talking about how the front parking lot is filling up, so students are having to park in the DECA parking lot. I used a 17-50mm lens to take this picture. I don't necessarily like this picture, but it was exactly what the editors wanted to go along with the story. The picture shows that the DECA parking lot is now getting full. YAYY!!!

lots of headshots

ISO 400, aperture 8.0, and a shutter speed of 1/160th of a second

This was my favorite environmental portrait. It was really sunny outside, so exposing all the bagillion headshots I took today correctly was not fun. I used the 24-105mm lens. This kid, Reece Griffen, can sing soooooo well!!

another high key, but of a can...

Both of these images were taken with a 17-50mm lens. Settings were: ISO 200, aperture 9.0, and a shutter speed of 1/200th of a second. Today Jacob came up to me during newspaper and told me he needed a picture of a can for online. He needed a picture of the front and the back. These images are going to be cut-outs, so I shot the can on high-key. Honestly, I'm getting so tired of high-key pictures. Over half of my pictures are high-key because that's pretty much all newspaper asks photography for. Hopefully, it'll change soon.

Newspaper Contest

Today I organized and printed contest pictures that will be entered into a newspaper contest. There is a category for online and print, each with five separate photograph categories. I looked through everyones pictures that have been pushed to the x-serve for newspaper and picked out the best ones for each category. It took quite a while! Some of the categories were hard to find pictures that were published on the online site or published in our printed newspapers of the last year. I learned how to use the new printers, and they all look amazing! I organized everything for Mrs. Potter before I gave all the pictures to her. I'm excited to see how the contest goes! All the pictures that were entered were great and hopefully will stand out for the judges!!

Deadline Week

This entire week has been very stressful because the 4th issue of the newspaper went to print and now there is a bunch of pictures that need to be done for the online newspaper. So I've been working on that all day. Nothing has been updated on the site, but that's not my fault.

Neat color scheme for the doubletruck

ISO 100, aperture 1.8, and a shutter speed of 1/320th of a second

The layout of this picture was Smith's idea, but it was Claire's idea to have an "A+" punched in through the target. Setting up everything for this picture and getting everything positioned right took a while. My dad and I punched out holes in the target and hung it up on a tree with a twisty-tie. My dad was positioned in the back with a gun in his right hand. I really like how this picture was taken and the color scheme. This picture was taken with a 50mm lens. I love the ivy in the image.

gray background headshot

ISO 160, aperture 8.0, and a shutter speed of 1/250th of a second

This was my first gray background headshot I shot for yearbook; it was very simple. At first, the autofocus wasn't working... but eventually it started working. boo-yah! I like taking headshots of gingers because they are easy to light correctly!

Boys Varsity Soccer

ISO 800, aperture 4.0, and a shutter speed of 1/160th of a second

Claire was scheduled to shoot this game, and I went to watch the game with some of my friends. The second half of the game, Claire let me shoot for a little bit. This is my favorite picture out of like the 15 pictures I took. This image was taken with a bigma. It's not great, but it's in focus. My shutter speed should have been at least 250th of a second for less blur.

Photoshop experiance

I helped give ideas of what to photoshop onto this picture, but I mainly watched Haley deal with photoshopping this apocalypse picture of our school and it's hilarious actually. By watching her use photoshop, I learned a lot about the tools and how the soft ware works. My favorite part about the image that has been extremely photoshopped is the happy cow going up to the alien ship. The photo of the school used in this photo was taken by Haley; there were many photos of the school for the yearbook cover so she just picked on and used it.

How to Shoot a Meeting and Newspaper Situation

For starters, there were still 12 photo assignments not done and they were needed before February 7th. I was not happy. Then, I was looking over the rosebuds photos that were taken at the last meeting to pick one out that would go up on the online newspaper, and they were horrible. So today at the beginning of class I talked about how it was ridiculous that photo assignments were assigned two weeks ago, and they were still not done. I talked about how the photographers who haven't gotten their stuff done should be like Ndidi because she ALWAYS has her stuff done a couple of days after I assign it. After that little gripe-out, I went over the rosebuds pictures. I discussed that all picture should consist of the officers talking, the sponsor talking, the rosebuds girls' reactions, and anything and everything that was going on (like roll call and the girls eating snacks and talking before the meetings). After the discussion everyone was clear on how to shoot meetings! It was a productive day today. There are only 4 assignments left and the events haven't happened for pictures to be taken. So, it's all good!! :)

Car Collision Physics' Activity

ISO 1000, aperture 2.8, and a shutter speed of 1/160th of a second

Well when I walked into newspaper, I was told that a car collision activity was happening in Mr. Upchurch's physics' class and I needed to go take pictures of it for the yearbook. It was hard to get images cause the class was all in groups and against the walls doing this activity, but I managed. THis is my favorite image because it showed what was going on and a group effort. I took this image with a 17-50mm lens.

lighting corrections

Earlier this week Haley and I noticed that the photos pushed of the girls soccer didn't have the correct lighting and needed to be fixed before they went up on a yearbook spread or anything for the newspaper. Haley was busy doing things for newspaper, so I helped Carlie and Sydney fixed the lighting in their photos. Both of them had wonderful action pictures and the lighting is now corrected!! Whoop whoop!!

Zierre Spotlight

ISO 400, aperture 11.0, and a shutter speed of 1/250th of a second

This image was taken for the yearbook. They are doing stories/spotlights on a single person out of each grade. It had to be cut out, so this picture was taken on high key. I really wish Smith's idea about putting paint on the drum and Zierre hitting the drum would have worked, but the paint would destroy the school drum. My idea of Zierre tossing a drum stick in the air and me capturing all of the spins couldn't work either because it would have needed to be done on a black background and the picture needed to get done. So, I ended up asking him to just bouncing the drumstick off of the drum and capturing the drumstick in the air. I used a 17-50mm lens.

Issue 4 cover photo: armed teacher

ISO 800, aperture 4.0, and a shutter speed of 1/250th of a second

This picture was a combined photo made up of multiple different pictures, like a panoramic. I took this image with a 70-200mm lens. It had rained that day so we used the neatly colored fence for the background, but normally when doing a picture like this you would want a picture with more depth of field (have more in the background). This picture is made up of nine different photos combined into one using photoshop! The nine images consisted of one in the top left, top middle, top right, middle right, the middle, middle left, lower left, lower middle, and lower right. Also, we set up a flash on a light stand close to the subject and facing down (the slave flash) and there was a flash on my camera (the master flash) that was triggering the other flash. I stood across the street when I took these images that became one. I really love the lighting and the red apple. The gun pops as well!! This picture was cropped to where the subject was to the right so that the newspaper could have room to have space for a text box.

ISO 800, aperture 4.0, and a shutter speed of 1/250th of a second

The only difference in this image from the panoramic picture is that it was taken with a 50mm and it was just a single image. We also repositioned her hand so you could see her manicure better!

This cover photo is supposed to show the newspaper's view on armed teachers. The newspaper staff wanted a female teacher armed with a gun. We used Mr. Smith's gun and we found a teacher that would be comfortable with a gun on their hip. The apple and notebook/bag was to show she was a teacher, and the manicure and just her outfit makes the point that she's a female. I really enjoyed this cover photo because it wasn't done in the studio! It's something different than all of the other cover photos I've taken this year! Plus this teacher gave Smith, Caroline, and I hot chocolate afterwards!!!

THS vs. Mt. Pleasant varsity basketball

ISO 1600, aperture 5.6, and a shutter speed of 1/250th of a second

I took this picture at the boy's varsity basketball game against Mt. Pleasant. I really like all the action going on in this image. I like how "number 1" is catching/throwing the ball from/to "number 15." I wish there wasn't a shadow on "number 15" and he was in focus with "number 1." I liked this image mainly because it looks different and it's at a different perspective.

ISO 1600, aperture 5.6, and a shutter speed of 1/250th of a second

I loveeeee this image!!!! I love his facial expression and how the motion is captured. I don't like the guys leg in the image though...

Both of these images were shot with a 17-50mm lens. Also, the basketball lighting was already set up by the other photographers who were shooting the freshman and JV game.

Assignment day! YAY!!!!!!

Today was the day were there were a ton of photo assignment from the newspaper staff, which is awesome cause the due date is in a month and it gives photographers a good amount of time to be creative and get them all done without stressing. I went through each assignment and talked about what needed to be done and how to be creative with it. Today was a very happy day. Everything for the next issue (that I know of has been assigned).
